Finding the musical style

accordion

I wrote the first song for Ilomilo at the same time we were working on the first conceptual trailer of the game. Back then the world of ilomilo was still young and under development, but Simon had already created this wonderful art style and we felt the music had to be equally unique to somehow match. There weren’t much time for me to start experimenting so we had to find some inspirational music that were very close to what we wanted in the game. We went through all kinds of tracks, I’m not going to list them here, but finally one of my old favorite bands from Iceland came up; Múm. Together with some other inspirations it felt like a perfect match. I have always wanted to create a project close to what they do, so it felt quite natural to take the music in that direction. Simon provided me with some toy sounds he had recorded earlier. I used them to create some nice instruments.

The track I ended up writing became the theme of ilomilo. I like to think it later inspired the rest of the team to further develop the world. You can hear it on the title screen and parts of it in various songs thought the game. It is also used in the first official trailer here on the blog. I’ll leave it at that for now. Keep checking this blog for more posts about the music and sounds of ilomilo.

Early creature concepts

These are some really early designs for creatures in the game. Click for a bigger version.

Only the bouncy thing and the plunger actually ended up in the game, while the other ones morphed in to other designs. The cross dressing gentleman and the unicycle dog are my personal favourites.

Art ramblings

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

When creating ilomilo’s visual style, I had the idea of trying to not take inspirations from other games, but instead from more traditional art, architecture and things that I felt I had not seen in other games. A goal I had set out was to make the look distinctly European, and also to make most of the assets look a bit off or asymmetrical. Perfect is boring! Inspirations come from everywhere but the most obvious are of course Hundertwasser, Klimt and Gaudi.
When making a new visual setting, I start with color combinations, materials or a general feeling. I find pictures that suits the feeling I want to communicate, in both colors and shapes, and make a tiny little collage to quickly get the idea across:

Regarding the characters, it feels like I’ve been scribbling ilo and milo-like characters for ages. Some of these are pretty old, but I definitely think there’s something ilomiloish in all of them:

What is ilomilo?

Friday, November 13th, 2009

iloaskNow that we finally got this blog up, we figured that it might be a good idea to tell you a little bit about what ilomilo is.
Ilomilo is a puzzle story about ilo and milo. Somehow, they always seem to lose eachother, so they need your help to be reunited.
So how is the game played? You control both of the characters and you can switch between them. Ilo and milo can pick up weird cubic creatures that do different kinds of fun stuff when you place them and you have to figure out how to place these creatures to help the other character advance. We call this “cooperating with yourself”. Also, there are strange carpets that are kind of magic. They will definitely train your three dimensional thinking. There is a lot more of funny elements and characters in the game,  but it wouldn’t be fun if we showed you everything right now would it? Anyway, I hope I made the basics of ilomilo a little more clear now!

cubes

Oh, by the way. People often ask how “ilomilo” is pronounced. It’s “eelomeelo”.
